Matt and Val's Tech Presentations
Readings
I read "Rated A," by Elder Marvin J. Ashton of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, printed in the November 1977 Ensign.
2. What were the most important things you learned from the readings?
These readings were a great reminder to me of the power and influence that media can have on you. There is a lot of bad media out there and a lot of good. The great thing is that we can choose what we will view and participate in. As I read I have been examining what I will participate in and what I will not.
3. How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?
As a parent/teacher I will show my children how to properly use media and how to choose uplifting media. I will guide them when they are exposed to media and help them to make good decisions. FHE and activities are great opportunities. I will use so much good media and how how much there is that they will realize how much good media there is and there's not enough time to participate in all the good, let alone the bad. We will discuss the use of media, its purposes, and how often we use it. We will learn how to use it correctly and practice it. Children must learn how to make correct decisions so that when they are on their own they will make them wisely and knowingly.
4. How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?
I can use what I have learned to help my family and friends by helping to make the resources available to them and discuss them with them. When I am with them I can share my standards for media use with them.

Using Technology in the Classroom

Technology Inventory
The students know quite a bit about technology and are much more tech savvy than I was at their age. They are able to navigate their computers very well with the mouse. Typing takes them a while but they can still do it. Technology is pretty readily available in the classroom, which is great!

Google Earth Project
Pedagogy – Students will be using self discovery as they look at the different continents and facts on GoogleEarth. They will also be looking of answers to questions we pose to them.
Technology – I will be using GoogleEarth because it has so many resources and visual images to help students envision the world and put the content we are learning about the continents in context.
Google Earth Project
Country | Activity | Google Earth Content | Details |
---|---|---|---|
North America | Read fun facts and then find then using the web find the answer to the question: What countries are found in North America? | Wikipedia, Borders and labels | path |
South America | Read fun facts and then find then using the web find the answer to the question: What are some of the different climates found in South America? | Wikipedia, Borders and labels, weather, global awareness | image overlay |
Europe | Read fun facts and then find then using the web find the answer to the question: What are some of the main tourist attractions here? | Wikipedia, Borders and labels, 3D buildings, panoramio | polygon |

The Tech Savvy Teacher Continued...
What is the content you’ll be using in your lesson?
Utah 3rd Grade Science Core Standard 1 – Students will understand that the shape of the Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce the appearance of the sun and moon moving through the sky. Objective 1 – Describe the appearance of Earth and the moon. Indicators a. Describe the shape of Earth and the moon as spherical. And indicator c. And list the differences in the physical appearance of Earth and the moon as
What is the pedagogy you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content?
We will be trying to help students use self discovery to learn about the earth’s shape and appearance as well as the moon and the sun. We will let them think of their own questions and then find their own answers.
What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?
Students will be using Google Sky, Stellarium and Inspiration 8 to discover answers to their questions and record what they have learned. They can then use Inspiration 8 to present what they have learned to other students in the class.
Storyboard Content
What is the content you’ll be using in your lesson?
I will be making a storyboard using a poem. The poem I will be using the poem, “I Love Squishy Things,” by Dave Rudolf from his book “Please Don’t Tease the Dragon!” Hopefully this will get the children excited about poetry and alliteration or word sounds. I will be using music from Freeplaymusic.com and pictures that I get off of google images.
What is the pedagogy you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content?
I will be using the Utah 2nd grade Core, Standard 4– Phonics and Spelling – Students use phonics and other strategies to decode and spell unfamiliar words while reading and writing. Objective 2 – Use knowledge of structural analysis to decode words, Indicator b. Identify sound patterns and apply knowledge to decode3 words (e.g., blends, digraphs, vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels). I will use the poem above to help point out different word combinations and spellings that are found in the poem. There is a lot of alliteration.
What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?
I will be using pictures from google images online, music from freeplaymusic.com, and a microphone to record the poem. I will use Photostory to put it all together.

The Tech Savvy Teacher
Angie Permann and Rebecca Pike
Do you go outside and look through a telescope to look at the moon? Or do you sleep outside under the stars? Have you ever wondered what the sun looks like up close? What if all these answers and more were available to you with the push of a button and your computer screen. We are here to teach you how this can become reality.
First, we want our students to be able to understand the appearance and the shape of the sun, moon, and earth through their own learning experiences. We want them to see how each play a very important role in providing us with life through light. Google sky and Celestia are the tools that help us to get a view of these three scientific wonders up close and learn what the relationship is that they have with one another.
Our objectives come from the UEN 3rd Grade Science content, Standard and objective #1. Students were to describe the appearance of the Earth and the moon, describe the shape of the earth and the moon as being spherical, explain that the sun is the source of light that lights the moon, and list the differences in the physical appearance of Earth and the moon as viewed from space. The students were to record their findings in a graph using Inspiration 8.
This provides a fun hands on and interactive way of learning about the earth on which they live and the light that they receive from the sun and the moon. This helps them to see their world in a whole new light.
