Two ideas from others presentations

I really liked how Chelsea used the promethean board ruler to have students measure different objects up on the board. This way everyone can see what is going on and learn at the same time. Stephanie's idea was also very good to help students understand symmetry. She had a powerpoint with examples and non-examples. The visuals were helpful in demonstrating the principle.

Internet Safety

I talked to a mother of 26 who has one little girl and another on the way. She knew a lot already about internet safety. She knew about preditors in places like My Space (we talked about how they are also in chat rooms - she doesn't like chat rooms). She knew that children were targeted for pornography through misspelled words. She doesn't agree with meeting people that you meet online for the most part. She monitors her computers use in the family at home. There is a password to get onto the computer and puts it in a public place. She knew that people are more bold to say things online than they are in person and that that can cause problems. The attitude for her is not what to do "if" a problem occurs, but "when" a problem occurs. I was able to help her see some more resources she could look at to increase her awareness even more and how she can prevent problems of people seeing too much of your personal information online. I sent her some of the talks that we read and alinks to websites that will help increase her awareness of cyberbullying, pornography, and how to protect yourself from preditors, etc. This was a very positive experience because she already knew quiet a bit about internet safety and agreed with precautions that should be taken. She appreciated having more resources to help her understand more and know how to prepare to help her children use technology appropriately. We were both of the opinion that technology is a very good thing when used correctly and that it can be easily abused. Helping children to have a well balanced life will help them avoid having too much time to abuse technology. We will teach our children correct principles and help them form good uplifting habits in their technology use.

Matt and Val's Tech Presentations

I really enjoyed seeing how Matt and Valerie used technology to enhance their lessons. Valerie guided the students very well in helping them to understand how to use a specific computer program to learn about fact families. The computer games really helped them to enjoy what they were learning and apply it. Matt was able to tell where his students were at in their understanding from the use of his technology because they could all send in their answer and then view the answer chart on the board. They were then able to discuss the right answers together. I think that this is a great idea! There are so many ways to use technology to enhance learning in the classroom. Thanks Matt and Val for some great ideas!

Readings

1. What article did you choose to read for your fourth article?

I read "Rated A," by Elder Marvin J. Ashton of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, printed in the November 1977 Ensign.

2. What were the most important things you learned from the readings?

These readings were a great reminder to me of the power and influence that media can have on you. There is a lot of bad media out there and a lot of good. The great thing is that we can choose what we will view and participate in. As I read I have been examining what I will participate in and what I will not.

3. How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?

As a parent/teacher I will show my children how to properly use media and how to choose uplifting media. I will guide them when they are exposed to media and help them to make good decisions. FHE and activities are great opportunities. I will use so much good media and how how much there is that they will realize how much good media there is and there's not enough time to participate in all the good, let alone the bad. We will discuss the use of media, its purposes, and how often we use it. We will learn how to use it correctly and practice it. Children must learn how to make correct decisions so that when they are on their own they will make them wisely and knowingly.

4. How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?

I can use what I have learned to help my family and friends by helping to make the resources available to them and discuss them with them. When I am with them I can share my standards for media use with them.

The Wonderful Thing That is the Promethean Board!

I have gotten to use technology a few times as I have taught. The Promethean board has been very helpful to me as I have taught reading and writing. In an interactive writing lesson we were writing about how to make a paper airplane. The students demonstrated how they make an airplane and then we brainstormed as a class what we should write to tell someone how ot make the airplane. When we decided on the title and the first sentence we would write, the students got to come up and write their sentence up on the promethean board. They really enjoyed getting to write on the board and loved that the font was in green because it was St. Patrick's day. They pay a lot more attention to the neatness of their handwriting when they write on the board I noticed. The board was great because everyone could see so well! i really enjoy using the promethean board and plan on using it for many activities in the future.

Using Technology in the Classroom

Having a promethean board in our classroom is very helpful to use in class. I could do a interactive writing lesson and use the board to have the students come and write the sentences we come up with on the board. Using the board excited the children because they can change the colors of their writing, they can erase work that they have done and want to do over, etc. The board is also able to be seen well by everyone in the class so all will learn and participate.

Technology Inventory

I was pleasantly surprised at how much technology we have available to us in our classroom and how much it is used. There are 4 computers in the classroom that students use daily at a literacy station to play literacy games. They take a computerized test every Friday on laptops that the school carts around. There is a TV and VCR player. Teachers have microphones that they can wear on their neck so that they or other students who are talking do not have to speak so loudly. Teachers have their own laptop. They have a projector they can attach their laptop to and use as well as a promethean board (like a SMARTboard). This is very useful for classroom instruction! Students can write on the board, teachers can use it in several different ways to make learning fun and interesting.
The students know quite a bit about technology and are much more tech savvy than I was at their age. They are able to navigate their computers very well with the mouse. Typing takes them a while but they can still do it. Technology is pretty readily available in the classroom, which is great!

The Tech Savvy Teacher Continued...

What is the content you’ll be using in your lesson?

Utah 3rd Grade  Science Core Standard 1 – Students will understand that the shape of the Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce the appearance of the sun and moon moving through the sky.  Objective 1 – Describe the appearance of Earth and the moon. Indicators a. Describe the shape of Earth and the moon as spherical.  And indicator c. And list the differences in the physical appearance of Earth and the moon as

What is the pedagogy you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content?

We will be trying to help students use self discovery to learn about the earth’s shape and appearance as well as the moon and the sun.  We will let them think of their own  questions and then find their own answers.

What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?

Students will be using Google Sky, Stellarium and Inspiration 8 to discover answers to their questions and record what they have learned.  They can then use Inspiration 8 to present what they have learned to other students in the class.

Storyboard Content

What is the content you’ll be using in your lesson?

I will be making a storyboard using a poem.  The poem I will be using the poem, “I Love Squishy Things,” by Dave Rudolf from his book “Please Don’t Tease the Dragon!”  Hopefully this will get the children excited about poetry and alliteration or word sounds.  I will be using music from Freeplaymusic.com and pictures that I get off of google images.

What is the pedagogy you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content?

I will be using the Utah 2nd grade Core, Standard 4– Phonics and Spelling – Students use phonics and other strategies to decode and spell unfamiliar words while reading and writing.  Objective 2 – Use knowledge of structural analysis to decode words, Indicator b. Identify sound patterns and apply knowledge to decode3 words (e.g., blends, digraphs, vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels).  I will use the poem above to help point out different word combinations and spellings that are found in the poem.  There is a lot of alliteration.

What is the technology you’ll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?

I will be using pictures from google images online, music from freeplaymusic.com, and a microphone to record the poem.  I will use Photostory to put it all together.

The Tech Savvy Teacher

How Do You See the World?

Angie Permann and Rebecca Pike

Do you go outside and look through a telescope to look at the moon? Or do you sleep outside under the stars? Have you ever wondered what the sun looks like up close? What if all these answers and more were available to you with the push of a button and your computer screen. We are here to teach you how this can become reality.

First, we want our students to be able to understand the appearance and the shape of the sun, moon, and earth through their own learning experiences. We want them to see how each play a very important role in providing us with life through light. Google sky and Celestia are the tools that help us to get a view of these three scientific wonders up close and learn what the relationship is that they have with one another.

Our objectives come from the UEN 3rd Grade Science content, Standard and objective #1. Students were to describe the appearance of the Earth and the moon, describe the shape of the earth and the moon as being spherical, explain that the sun is the source of light that lights the moon, and list the differences in the physical appearance of Earth and the moon as viewed from space. The students were to record their findings in a graph using Inspiration 8.

This provides a fun hands on and interactive way of learning about the earth on which they live and the light that they receive from the sun and the moon. This helps them to see their world in a whole new light.

This is what the website will look like when you pull up "Celestia"

TPACK

TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge. Teachers need to have a knowledge in all of these areas and then be able to effectively tie them together to create a stimulating learning environment in the classroom. There are many resources available online to help you learn the content, how to teach it, and how to use technology to help you teach it or help children learn. Technology can make the content and teaching much more exciting for children. One of the coolest websites available for teachers to use in their classrooms to help teach science is Google Sky. You can focus in on different parts of the sky and see a lot of details from the telescope tht they use! You can also see a lot of different constelations and they will outline them for you in the sky. You can learn about the solar systems, galexy and see awesome space images to help students picture what you are talking about. There is so much that you can do on this website and it will really get students excited! It is very user friendly and the students could get onto the website themselves and learn more.

RSS Feeds and Web 2.0

Wow! I learned a lot of new information from this weeks assignments. There are so many awesome resources available to help organize ideas and other resources on the web. I didn't realize I could use the web so much to help my students become familiar with technology and have fun with it as they learn virtually every subject. Technology allows students to receive feedback from family members who may be overseas or live to far to see the picture that they drew hung on the fridge. Web 2.0 allows for a sharing of information between teachers - such as great educational links and books to read in your classroom. Web 2.0 sites such as Goodreads can really help parents to find good books for the chidldren to read. RSS feeds make it so much easier to get the information that you want quickly and efficiently. I can use these tools as a teacher to make learning more fun and adding variety to project ideas. Students will learn a lot by using these tools in their learning.

Technology Background and Experience

IP&T 287 is a very welcome and needed course for me.  My background in technology is very basic.  I can use the basic word programs and internet.  I use the internet daily for school and communication through email or facebook.  I can tell you that if there is a problem or the computer freezes you hit control/alt/delete and magic happens (as long as you have saved your work :)).  I use a cell phone daily and every now and again run with an ipod.  Digital pictures are delightful and sometimes I'll watch a DVD.  I listen to CD's (I know they are becoming "old school").  Needless to say I use technology everyday, but I am a novice and open to help!
